The Mormon Jesus Can’t Save You

You read that right.

If you grew up in the LDS Church, you’ve probably heard this before: Jesus and Lucifer are spirit brothers. Both were spirit children of Heavenly Father. Both presented plans for humanity. One was chosen. The other got salty and became Satan.

If you grew up in the LDS Church, you’ve probably heard it said that Jesus and Lucifer are spirit brothers. They were Heavenly Father’s top spirit children, each presenting their plans for humanity. One was chosen, and the other decided to rebel and became the entity known as Satan.

The idea that Jesus and Lucifer are literally siblings in the pre-mortal world is a core part of LDS doctrine. The only problem is, like with so many other LDS doctrines, it’s nowhere in the Bible. In fact, it directly contradicts everything the Bible tells us about who Jesus is.

So, just like we did with the nature of God, we’re going to tackle this head-on and answer the question: Is Jesus just one of God’s spirit children—or is He something infinitely greater?

What the Bible Actually Says About Jesus

Before we discuss Lucifer, let’s discuss Jesus—who He really is, according to Scripture.

Spoiler: He’s not just some spirit child hanging out in a celestial family tree. He’s not your older sibling from the pre-existence. He’s not even a created being.

Jesus Is Eternal and Uncreated

Let’s start right at the beginning—literally.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”—John 1:1

“He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.”—John 1:2–3

There it is: Jesus is eternal. He was already there “in the beginning.” He didn’t come into existence—He is existence itself. Everything that exists came into being through Him.

Which means even Satan was created by Jesus. There’s no way around that. You can’t be someone’s “spirit brother” if you’re the result of His creative power.

Paul backs this up in Colossians:

“For in him all things in heaven and on earth were created… all things have been created through him and for him.”—Colossians 1:16

All things includes Satan, demons, powers, authorities, and everything else. Jesus wasn’t made with them, He made them Himself.

Jesus Is God in the Flesh

Jesus is not your equal. He isn’t your literal spiritual big brother. He is God incarnate.

“In him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.”—Colossians 2:9

“Before Abraham was, I am.”—John 8:58

Go and read John 8 for yourself. Jesus doesn’t say, “I was born in the spirit world before Abraham.” He says, “Before Abraham was, I am,”—invoking the name of Yahweh from Exodus 3:14.

And don’t say this isn’t Jesus claiming divinity because the Jews knew exactly what He meant. They picked up stones to kill Him for blasphemy.

He’s not just god-like—He is God. He didn’t become divine—He is divine. He has always been and always will be.

Jesus Is Worshiped—Rightfully

Only God is worthy of worship (Exodus 20:3–5; Revelation 22:8–9). You do not offer worship to any created thing. Yet, Jesus receives worship constantly in the New Testament:

  • The disciples worship Him after He calms the storm (Matthew 14:33)
  • Thomas calls Him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28)
  • Angels worship Him (Hebrews 1:6)
  • Every knee will bow to Him (Philippians 2:10)

If Jesus were just another created being, every single one of His chosen disciples and apostles would be guilty of blasphemy. But because He is the eternal Son of God, co-equal with the Father, He is worthy of worship; worship is then the only appropriate response.

So let’s be clear:

  • Jesus isn’t Satan’s peer.
  • He isn’t another member of the “heavenly family.”
  • He is the Creator of all things, including Satan.

There is an irreconcilable difference between the Jesus of the Bible and the Jesus of LDS doctrine.

What the LDS Church Teaches About Jesus and Satan

According to the LDS Church:

“The first spirit born to our heavenly parents was Jesus Christ, so he is literally our elder brother.”1

“The name ‘Lucifer’ is a title that refers to the devil before his rebellion against God and his fall from heaven. He was a spirit son of God and one of the heavenly host.”2

Ironically enough, they call Satan Lucifer, which we know is a mistranslation by Jerome in the Latin Vulgate, combining the words for “light” and “bearer.” So it’s not even Satan’s name at all.

LDS apostle Milton R. Hunter once wrote:

“The appointment of Jesus to be the Savior of the world was contested by one of the other sons of God. He was called Lucifer… this spirit-brother of Jesus desperately tried to become the Savior of mankind.”3

Anyway, according to LDS doctrine, Jesus and Lucifer were both born to the same Heavenly Father, in the same pre-existence, just with different attitudes and personalities.

One presented a righteous plan and became the Savior. The other got rejected, threw a tantrum, and became Satan.

Understand that this isn’t just some old, outdated teaching or grasping at straws. This view of Jesus is echoed in modern materials, seminary manuals, and will even come up in missionary discussions.

Why This Matters

Let’s just cut to the chase: If you believe in the wrong Jesus, you believe in the wrong gospel. And if you believe in the wrong gospel, you cannot be saved.

Yes, it’s that serious.

This isn’t just a quirky doctrinal that we can overlook. The idea that Jesus is Satan’s spirit brother isn’t some harmless metaphor—it’s a full-blown denial of Christ’s deity, eternality, and supremacy. Again, it’s theological issues like these that force Christians to admit that Mormons are not Christians.

According to the Bible, Jesus is God in the flesh, the Creator of all, the Alpha and the Omega.

According to the LDS Church, Jesus is a spirit baby, born to Heavenly Parents, who just happened to choose the right plan.

Those two versions of Jesus can’t both be true. One is the eternal King of kings, and the other is a glorified sibling in a celestial family drama.

Here’s what Scripture says about that kind of teaching:

“If someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed… you put up with it readily enough.”—2 Corinthians 11:4

Paul calls it what it is: another Jesus.

And he doesn’t stop there:

“Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let that one be accursed!”—Galatians 1:8

I’m not sure how much more direct these warnings could be. A restored gospel? Delivered by an “angel?” With a different Jesus and a different gospel?

For any LDS member reading this, it should reveal the spiritual crisis you’re in. The Jesus of Mormonism cannot save you because He isn’t the real Jesus. He’s a counterfeit—an imitation that fits into a man-centered, exaltation-focused worldview.

Only the Jesus of the Bible can save. The uncreated, all-powerful, sovereign Son of God—who was not made but made all things. That’s the Jesus who crushed Satan—not shared bunk beds with him.

Final Verdict

Here’s the bottom line: The LDS Church preaches another Jesus—one who isn’t eternal, isn’t the Creator, and isn’t God in the flesh. They may use the same name, read from the same Bible, and talk about faith in Christ, but when the foundation is off, everything built on it collapses.

The real Jesus isn’t Lucifer’s brother, a spiritual sibling of Satan’s, or even a created being at all.

The real Jesus is God. Always has been and always will be.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”—John 1:1

“All things came into being through him.”—John 1:3

This is the Jesus the apostles worshiped. This is the Jesus who holds the universe together. This is the Jesus who conquered death, crushed the serpent, and reigns forever.

This is the Jesus you need.

If you’ve been following a false version of Christ, it’s time to walk away from the counterfeit.

Only the real Jesus saves.
